In-house book review
Valerie and the Curse of the Diamond Necklace by Bruce Dulany
A compelling young adult novel following the adventures of Valerie in her bid to break the curse of the diamond necklace which brought her bad luck and misfortunes.
In this delightful book, readers are introduced to Valerie Hernandez, a 12-year-old girl laden with bad luck. Valerie is smart and does well in school, but she can never explain why bad luck and misfortune keep following her. She starts to think she is adopted as she is the only one in her family hounded by misfortunes. Valerie tries looking for a good luck charm to reverse her fortune but to no avail.
Unknown to Valerie, she is a victim of an evil curse, and her parents are in a dilemma. They are undecided whether to tell her now or wait until she’s eighteen. Growing up, unusual incidents and situations kept happening to Valerie. At one point her parents thought about hiring a security guard for her protection. They also looked into buying a giant bubble suit for her protection. After watching the movie Rapunzel, her dad even thought of locking her in a tower until she turned eighteen. They decided against all of them in hopes Valerie would grow up to be a normal person.
Now that Valerie is asking questions, they decide to tell her through a letter that she is indeed a victim of a curse put by Wendy Papadopoulos out of hatred and bitterness to the Hernandez family when the Hernandezes found a diamond necklace that brought them good fortunes decades ago. Wendy’ curse will hound the first-born daughter in each generation of the Hernandez family with bad luck. Valerie could only break this curse if she is able to solve the three-part riddle set by Wendy. With the help of her Uncle Bruce and her friends, Valerie set out an adventure to solve the riddle and break the curse.
Author Bruce Dulany is to be commended for writing this highly entertaining book. The story and the humor injected in the book is going to hook readers while they root for Valerie to solve the riddle and break the curse. The hilarious situations and dialogues are enough for me to recommend this book. The characters are a plus in the book as well, as the author did not write them as one-dimensional. All have complexities that add appeal to the book. The twist at the end of the story is an added bonus for adventure enthusiasts. This book is highly recommended!
